The Dangers of Aspartame
Why chose natural foods & drink over those that contain chemical ingredients? If you read wikipedia, you will find that the FDA has approved aspartame for human consumption (a.k.a. Nutrasweet and Equal) and we’re given statistics of how many countries have approved it. We are also told that it is “safe’ for human consumption. What’s interesting is the personal experiences of many people I’ve either spoken to or heard about that conflict with these official sounding statements. Furthermore, a simple search online with the words “dangers of aspartame” reveals the many who disagree with the FDA. See one doctor’s experience with healing herself of aspartame-induced Graves Disease.
The Story
The video on this page (above – see also the other video, link found at the bottom of this article) exposes the dangers of nutrasweet, the interesting results of the investigative board prior the approval of this chemical by the FDA and the experiences of just a few people. While the video is somewhat dated, we still find aspartame on the shelves at the grocery store. We can therefore conclude that the FDA has not changed its position. What makes this refusal a glaring violation of their duties is that they continue to refuse to review the matter despite the fact that the Department of Health and Human Services has identified 91 symptoms related to aspartame consumption including but not limited to difficulty breathing, headaches, dizziness, mood changes, nausea, stomach pain.
The Solution
The bottom line is that the FDA is not going to change their position or protect us from poisons if there is sufficient economic interest in favor of its sale to the public. Therefore, it’s up to us to be informed and vote with our wallets: let’s not consume anything with aspartame! A great alternative is xylitol (I’ll write about the benefits of xylitol in the near future.)
