Did you know that 6 out of 10 Americans are considered overweight and over acidic? Now, that’s scary! The good news is that we can change both those things. When your body is overly acidic, your body creates fat cells to protect your vital organs. So, when you create an alkaline state, you have an environment where disease cannot live body and your body will thrive. You will be more alkaline and lose weight, a winning combination in my book.
Below, are ten ways to help your body get rid of this over-acidic state:
Alkalizing Secret #1: Drink pure alkaline water – The ideal is getting an alkaline ionization unit. If it’s out of your budget, distilled water and reverse osmosis are other good options. Alkaline water has a pH over 7.5. Even though how much you should actually drink is always up to debate, I commonly hear that you should drink half your body weight of water in ounces.
Alkalizing Secret #2: Eat celery – Celery is not only great for digestion but it’s one of the most alkaline foods youcan eat. It is also full of water so will help with you daily water intake.
Alkalizing Secret #3: Eat green salads – Vegetables with high water content include: cucumbers, lettuce, tomatoes, celery, broccoli, cabbage, spinach, cauliflower, and carrots. See chart below for more alkaline options.
Alkalizing Secret #4: If you like dairy, try switching to almond or rice milk. It’s actually hard to properly metabolize the protein in cow’s milk. Dairy cows are also sadly injected with hormones so avoid cow’s milk in general.
Alkalizing Secret #5: Avoid artificial sweeteners – Aspartame, Saccharin, NutraSweet, and Sucralose are some of the main ones that are not only acidifying but have detrimental effects on the nervous system.
Alkalizing Secret #6: Eat grapefruit first thing in the morning – When you do, wait 15 minutes before eating any carbs or protein. Apply this 15-minute rule to all fruit. Fruit should really never be combined with any other food type. Grapefruit, like lemon, is actually very alkalizing contrary to popular belief.
Alkalizing Secret #7: Limit or eliminate red meat, pork or lamb and substitute them with chicken, turkey, or fresh fish. Red meat is highly acidic and hard on the digestive system.
Alkalizing Secret #8: Reduce stress – try yoga, meditation, tai chi…When I lived in San Diego, I used to go for long walks on the beach. That was my therapy. Anything you can do to calm your mind/body will have a huge impact on alkalizing your body. Stress actually shuts down the digestive system and toxins no longer get eliminated so keep that stress level down!
Alkalizing Secret #9: Add in a top quality super green supplement. Organic super greens are nutrient dense foods that help neutralize acids in the blood and tissues.
Alkalizing Secret #10: Avoid anything processed or refined. That means anything made of white flour, white sugar, food coloring… I always recommend avoiding the aisles in the grocery store and focusing on the peripheral.
