Toxin-free living is more than eating healthy balanced meals and organic foods. There’s more to the overall picture of health. Your daily habits and the products you use also play an important role.
Tips for Healthy and Toxin-Free Living
Here are some tips for healthy living from Doris Rapp, M.D, a pioneer in environmental medicine and allergies.
Microwave – Do not use the microwave ever! Using a microwave exposes you to microwave radiation.
Cookware – Do not use aluminum or thin stainless steel pots or pans. Use glass, ceramic coated or heavy stainless steel ones instead.
Food storage – Do not use aluminum foil or plastic wrap to store food. Use glass containers or mason jars instead. I bought Glass Tupperware at Costco and Pyrex containers with lids to replace all the plastic I had in my kitchen. I especially love glass because you can put it in the oven or freezer.
Plastic – Do not eat or store anything in plastic. Buy foods like mayonnaise, mustard… in glass.
Beverages – Don’t drink from aluminum cans since this can cause Alzheimer’s. If you drink bottled water, make sure the plastic it is toxin-free or BPA free.
Air Fresheners – They may contain formaldehyde which can cause cancer so avoid them altogether.
Clothing – Avoid synthetic materials like polyester (contains formaldehyde that can cause cancer) as well as anything that says wrinkle-free, stain resistant or pesticided cotton. Synthetic materials are also thought to disrupt the body’s electrical currents.
Dry-Cleaning – Chemicals like chloroethylenes are used in dry-cleaned clothes and can cause cancer. Find “green” non-toxic cleaners. If there are none in your area, air out the clothes in an unused room before wearing. For really tough stains, I’ve used Quick-n’-Brite (a toxin-free stain remover and cleaner) very successfully.
Mothballs – Never use them. They are toxic. Try essential oils such as cedar, clove, mint or orange. You can also store your wool in sealed special garment bags.
Hair Dye – Never use hair dyes. Many can cause cancer. Use toxin-free natural hair dyes like henna if you need to cover your grays or change your hair color.
Toothpaste – Use NO fluorinated toothpaste. Fluoride can lead to numerous health issues like reduced cognitive ability in children, reduced learning and memory. There are a number of choices for natural, toxin-free toothpaste, here is one excellent fluoride free toothpaste.
Electromagnetic Exposure – Many illnesses can be caused by exposure from computers, call phones, TV, cable and radio towers. Make sure to turn off the electronics when not in use and keep your cell phone away from you and your night stand when you’re sleeping.
Dental Care – Do not use mercury or metal fillings. I actually replaced my amalgams several years ago. Go to a specialist who does this. If not done properly, I have heard that the mercury can leech out during the removal process and that could be much worse than just leaving it in.
Natural Home Cleaners – Here are some great natural, toxin-free DIY recipes.
Overall health is really about doing a variety of things like eating healthy, exercising, detoxing, using natural personal care and household products… Remember the great quote “If you don’t take care of your body, where are you going to live?” ~ Unknown

There is a lot of evidence that cooking with aluminum cookware has links to Alzheimers disease. Not sure I agree that microwaves expose you to radiation. These days it’s pretty rare for microwaves to leak. Do you have an article I can refer to?
This is an awesome list, and I’ve bookmarked it for reference. It’s funny, we had to get rid of our microwave because it was malfunctioning, and we just never got another one, mainly because of what it does to the food!! I’m quite thankful the microwave broke! lol
