Being unaware of limiting beliefs is a problem
Have you ever convinced yourself that you are not strong enough, smart enough, young enough, old enough, educated enough, daring enough, confident enough… to do something, anything? If you don’t make yourself aware of it, your limiting statements they become limiting beliefs and what you convince yourself of whether it be true or not are so powerful that they become your reality. Let me illustrate.
One of the things I convinced myself of a long time ago was that I just couldn’t live without cheese. I was French and that’s what French people do. It’s as if I was Italian and didn’t eat pasta. How crazy would that be? I grew up eating cheese and that habit continued daily until five days ago.
The illusion of limiting beliefs
Five days ago I started Sharon’s Otness’ Rev Up Your Radiance Summer Detox. I told myself this was the perfect time to cut out the cheese from my diet. I’d tried this before but not successfully. I had made minor modifications like buying goat cheese vs cow’s milk cheese. The problem was that I was still eating cheese every day. Ask any of my friends. They have all heard me say at one point or another “everything tastes better with cheese”!
So, here I am on day five of my Summer Detox and guess what? What I had convinced myself of (I couldn’t live without cheese) was the farthest thing from the truth. I don’t even miss it.
I share this story with you because I am sure we are all guilty of convincing ourselves of things, of self-sabotaging limiting beliefs. When we believe a thought, we give it power and it becomes a belief. However being aware that those little statements of so-called reality are simply mirages, illusions that have no value for our growth or well-being, allows us to negate their power. So, next time you catch yourself doing this, letting your limiting beliefs get the better of you, use the following tools:
How to rid yourself of limiting beliefs
Remember that it’s only when you accept a thought that you give it power and it becomes your reality. As soon as you realize that a particular belief is not serving you, stop believing it. This doesn’t happen over night so be patient. After a few months, that belief will lose power and finally stop influencing your reality.
Developing awareness is the key to a brighter future in all respects. Since this is easier said than done, start meditating every morning right after you get up. Check out Roy Masters’ simple meditation exercise (he calls it the Be Still and Know exercise). This exercise was recommended to me by several people who have used it successfully for years (disclosure: I am not affiliated in any way with the Foundation for Human Understanding or Roy Masters).
We are so much stronger than we think, than we allow ourselves to be. We have the power to live any reality we want so why not live a grand one? Start by becoming aware of any limiting beliefs, then shifting them into ones that are aligned with your desired reality all the while letting go of any beliefs that don’t come from a place of abundance.
Here’s to a fun, happy, stimulating, and abundant life!
This post is a very good reminder. I need to get back to meditating and more positive thinking.
Great post. A reminder that we can do what we set out to do as long as we have the mindset. Anita
Great post, Caroline! It’s true being aware of the patterns and beliefs is the first step, and possibly the hardest one. Sometimes they run so deep it’s hard to pinpoint which ones are limiting us and which ones supporting us, because they all feel ‘true.’
I like the cheese story – it makes it something more tangible.
Thanks!
I’m with you on the cheese, too. I never thought I could give it up either, but finally gave up all dairy products and don’t miss them at all. That’s not to say I didn’t completely splurge – and survive – my last trip to France where I ate all the bread and cheese I wanted! In the end, it is a matter of making a decision, changing our thoughts and ultimately seeing the benefits of getting rid of those limiting beliefs.
