The Miracle of Oil Pulling Part 2: QuickStart Guide
Now that you read about all the benefits of oil pulling, I understand that you’re eager to get started! So, let’s go over the basics.
What oil should I use
From the research I’ve done, you can use sesame oil, sunflower oil, or coconut oil. You want raw, organic, cold-pressed oil. I prefer coconut oil. Not only do I love the flavor, using coconut oil adds another layer of benefits because it has antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory properties.
What to do
Put about ½ to 1 full tablespoon of oil into your mouth and swirl it around for anywhere from 5-20 minutes. I was at a lecture about detoxing a while ago where the naturopath suggested oil pulling for 30 minutes every day for 30 days. Do what works for you. The important thing about oil pulling is that you want to swish the oil around, pulling the oil in between your teeth (hence the name!) and around your gums. You really want it to get everywhere. Just be careful not to gargle or swallow it. You don’t want all those germs in your throat or body. When you’re done, spit it in the toilet and brush your teeth (or at least rinse your mouth).
When to oil pull
You can do oil pulling any time of the day, but to reap the most benefits and not have excuses not to do it, it’s best to do in the morning, before eating or drinking anything. If you’re too busy running around in the morning, why not do it in the shower? That way you don’t have to stress about the time and you still get the benefits.
It’s something you can do every day indefinitely. It only does a body good so why not add it to your daily regime? If that doesn’t work for you, do it as often as you can. It is better to do it every day for a month than once a month. That way you can actually reduce your toxic load.
Update: January 2017 While I have used raw organic coconut oil for oil pulling, I have found that I enjoy oil pulling so much more by using CoCobaci oil pulling packets.
Here’s what I love about them:
- Easy to Use – Just tear off the top and you’re on your way to oil pulling
- Great Flavor – Choose from Raspberry, Lemon, or Mint
- Convenient – The individual packets make it so easy first thing in the morning when you’re not quite awake yet. They’re also perfect for traveling.
- Benefit from the essential oils used in each flavor – for example peppermint helps with indigestion and headaches while lemon helps alkalize the body and raspberry boosts immunity. All the flavors are winners. Mixing it up keeps the daily ritual more interesting.
Whatever you decided to do, make sure it works for you. Even if 5 minutes a day is all you do, you’re still way ahead of the game.
