I got inspired today to write about homeopathy because my husband came down with the flu last night and we are treating him with the best kind of natural remedies, homeopathic remedies. In just a few hours, his fever is down, the headache is better, the chills have subsided…
Homeopathy has a long history in my family. My great grandfather was a homeopath in France. My grandparents, parents, aunts and uncles have all used homeopathy as their medicine. I even have cousins who were never vaccinated and only treated them with homeopathy. They were never sick.
What is Homeopathy?
Based on the principle that like cures like, homeopathy was discovered more than two hundred years ago by a prominent German physician, chemist, and pharmacologist, Samuel Hahnemann. These natural remedies are the result of diluted natural substances known to stimulate the body’s innate capacity to heal itself. The more the remedies are shaken and diluted, the less concentrated they are and the stronger they become.
Less is More with These Natural Remedies
I love that less is more with homeopathy. When using homeopathic remedies, it is recommended that you take as small an effective dose as possible. Because homeopathic remedies stimulate the body’s innate capacity to heal, the moment the healing process begins, there is no reason to push it further.
How to Take Homeopathic Remedies
The rule of thumb with homeopathic remedies is to take one dose and wait fifteen minutes. Then do the following:
- If there is significant improvement after a dose, just wait.
- Repeat the dose only if you being to feel worse again.
- Do not repeat a dose if there is no effect at all.
- The worse the condition, the shorter the intervals between doses. i.e. If in a major car accident, repeat the dose every five to ten minutes. For a cold or flu, repeating a dose every fifteen to thirty minutes is fine.
- Stop when you feel 50-60% better.
How to Select Your Homeopathic Remedies
Homeopathy can be rather confusing. There are so many factors that need to be taken into consideration like mental state, physical state, what makes you feel better or worse (lying down, movement, drinking cold water…), and when do you feel better or worse (i.e. time of day)…That is why I took a Basic Homeopathy class years ago and was introduced to what I call my homeopathic bible, Easy Homeopathy: The 7 Essential Remedies You Need for Common Illnesses and First Aid by Edward Shalts, M.D., D.Ht. It does a great job breaking down different remedies into tables so you can easily figure out which remedy is right for you. It also covers which remedies to use for the most common ailments.
I think preparation is key. To prevent or reduce length and severity of any health issue, you need to be ready to fight whatever ailments come our way. That is why I always have at least the following seven basic homeopathic remedies in my home all year round.
The 7 Natural Remedies To Have on Hand per Dr. Shalts
Here are the seven remedies that are described in detail in the book Easy Homeopathy. You will be amazed at all the uses for these and other natural remedies.
- Colds and flu – Aconitum
- Injuries and trauma – Arnica
- Sore throats and fevers – Belladonna
- Common childhood problems like colic or earaches – Chamomilla
- Depression and grief – Ignatia
- Headaches and migraines – Gelsemium
- Gastrointestinal problems – Nux Vomica
I can go on and on about homeopathy being the greatest natural remedies but I’ll save that for another time. If you’re new to homeopathy or want to know more about what’s available, feel free to explore the wonderful world of homeopathic remedies at XLvita.com. I carry some of the big brands like A Vogel, Boiron, and Hyland’s. I haven’t added the individual remedies like the seven above but will be doing that soon.
To your health!
Thanks for these great tips, Caroline! It’s interesting to see what a long history of homeopathy is in your family.
I often wonder about giving my dogs something for their tummies. They eat so much grass, I believe I’m not feeding them something they should be eating. I’ve started adding broccoli or spinach to their meals.
Your post has inspired me to get more serious about homeopathy for my dogs 🙂
Stay true to you,
Laurie
