On Groupon the other day was an offer for chemical peels. It made me think, why on earth would anyone voluntarily put chemicals on their skin, the biggest organ of the body? I get the wanting to look younger. I am a woman after all but for me, compromising health for beauty is not worth it.
I wasn’t always this way but the more I learned, the more I said no-way to things like botox, plastic surgery… I am the way I am and that’s just perfect! It doesn’t mean that I don’t take care of myself, use awesome natural skincare products to slow down the aging process… but never at the expense of my health.
So, let’s look a little deeper at this offer for chemical peels.
“Medical-grade chemical peels remove the face’s superficial layer of dull skin cells, improving skin tone and texture and reducing the appearance of acne, age spots, discoloration, and fine lines. The solution includes a numbing agent to minimize discomfort, and any peeling or redness should subside within a week. ” In two short sentences a chemical peel goes from sounding pretty good to not good at all.
Removing dull dead skin, improving skin tone and texture, reducing the appearance of acne, age spots, discoloration, and fine lines. All of that is great but you don’t need a chemical peel for that. The Nonie of Beverly Hills skin care line will do all that for you! It is 100% natural, with no preservatives, no chemicals, no discomfort, no peeling or redness.
Discomfort, peeling, redness for a week, maybe more? Really? The fact that you need a numbing agent to get a chemical peel would be enough for me to say “pass”. But let’s dig deeper at what else may result from a chemical peel.
Dangers, Side Effects, and Risks of Chemical Peels
According to Gary W. Cole, MD, FAAD in an article posted on MedicineNet, “the risks, side effects, and complications of chemical peels include:
- Scarring
- Infection
- Reactivation of herpes simplex infections, and
- A substantial contrast in coloration of the treated skin
All patients will have a recuperation period, the length of which depends upon the depth of the peel. Deep peels can result in substantial periods of healing on the order of weeks. Deep peels generally require extensive local anesthesia, deep sedation, and occasionally general anesthesia, which carries its own risks.” 1
According to WebMD, here is what you may expect from a chemical peel. Depending upon the type of chemical peel, a reaction similar to sunburn occurs following the procedure. You may peel and be red. You may also have swelling and blisters that may break, crust, turn brown, and peel off over a period of seven to fourteen days. You may need bandages for several days on part or all of the skin that was treated.
You’ll also need to avoid the sun for several months after a chemical peel since your new skin will be fragile. I don’t know where you live but I live in SoCal so good luck avoiding the sun.
But wait. There’s more! 🙂
You may also develop a temporary or permanent color change in the skin. So if you take birth control, had subsequent pregnancy, or a family history of brownish discoloration on the face, discoloration is even more likely.
I have never had a chemical peel but after reading this, I know that they are not for me. I have friends, however, who swear by them. I rather find a natural solution that will have similar benefits without any risk, complications, recuperating needed…
That being said, the mildest form of chemicals peels involves glycolic acid which is an alpha hydroxy acid used not only in chemical peels and anti-aging skin products. While it can irritate skin, it doesn’t appear to be harmful like the other chemicals that are used for stronger and deeper chemical peels.
You are What you Apply
Apply to your skin that is! Chemicals applied on your skin get absorbed directly into your bloodstream bypassing our natural detox system. For that very reason, what you put on your skin is even more important than what you eat.
There is good news though. Nonie of Beverly Hills has a skin care line that is simple and so clean you could eat it. It probably wouldn’t taste good but because of how pure it is, you can use it right around the eyes eliminating the need for an eye cream. I love that! It keeps it simple and cost effective.
Instead of spending $150-$900+ a chemical peel, you can use safe, effective, and natural skin care for a fraction of the price. It consists of a cleanser, toner, and moisturizer. Imagine! That is all you need to have youthful radiant-looking skin. There is no down time, no need for numbing cream, no risk of scaring, discoloration…the list goes on and on.
So, even though the offer seemed to good to pass up, it’s not! Even at the greatly discounted price of $99, it is too high a price to pay. Think about feeding our skin great and effective all-natural ingredients instead of feeding it chemicals. We are exposed to enough chemicals as it is. At least here, we have a choice. A choice to use natural, toxin-free skincare and say no to chemical and potentially dangerous treatments.
If you are not familiar with Nonie of Beverly Hills, I invite you to check them out at XLvita.com. Your skin and liver will thank you for it.
