Living your full potential?
Think about how two people with very similar backgrounds can end-up in a very different places in life. One achieves their full potential, the other does not appear to. Have you ever wondered why?
Because we’re all different, we do things differently, but most importantly, we look at the world differently. Our outlook has a significant impact on everything we do and that outlook shapes whether or not we will reach our full potential and live life to the fullest. The closer we get to achieving our full potential the happier we are or will be.
That’s all very nice but how can we break this down into a simple model so that we can easily determine where we are today so we can get on the road to reaching our full potential?
Three types of people
We can simplify things a bit by stating that there are three types of people out there:
- The person who makes it happen.
- The person who watches it happen.
- The person who wonders what happened.
I’m sure that most of us have been all three at various times in our lives but what you do the majority of the time is what really matters.
Which one do you subscribe to most of the time? Are you proactively chasing your goals and dreams? Are you creating your destiny or leaving your life to fate? Maybe you watch life happen from the side lines? Or are you the person who wakes up one day and wonder what’s happened with your life? If you are the second or third type of person, do you wish for more?
Practical example
So how do these three types of people relate to health? If you are the first type of person, you are all about prevention. You take responsibility for your health and wellbeing. You are your biggest advocate and you will do what it takes for you to have the health you desire. If you’re the second kind of person, you go about your life and watch as your health deteriorates. Maybe you gain weight, start having aches and pains, and just accept that as part of life and getting older. If you’re the third kind of person, you wake up one day and wonder how you got to be the way you are. You reminisce on the good ol’ times and wish you were young again, healthy again. You miss your energy, your drive.
It’s never too late
If you’ve taken a more passive role with your health or life, it’s ok – it’s never too late. The cool thing is that you have the power to change. We can be whoever we want to be so why not be the person who makes things happen, a mover and shaker? Why not do what you need to do to achieve your full potential? We all have it in us so come on, let’s get to it and live a grand and healthy life! Life can be awesome so let’s make it awesome! The choice is yours.

Caroline, this is a fabulous article! You are so right…we must take action to prevent bad outcomes. If we want different results, we must make different choices! I am dealing with several “effects” of being post-menopausal, and I am determined to beat them. There is no reason to accept “this is just part of growing older.” I plan to be active until I am at least 90!
I’m definitely someone who makes it happen. I’m proactive. I’m going for my goals and dreams. I take responsibility for my health and well being. I do have to say, though, that even with two people who are the “make it happen” type, one can appear to have reached their potential and the other can appear not to have reached it yet. Even if we’re making it happen, we’ve all got different things to learn and we all have different journeys. So, I just think there’s another layer to the picture.
Thank you so much Susan. I’m delighted by your determination and your plan to be active for a very long time. That is awesome! I am sure you will figure out how to beat those not-so-pleasant issues of being post-menopausal. I’ve realized over the years that dealing with any issue usually takes trying a variety of things and then using a mix to solve the problem. Good luck!
Thank you for your feedback Leanne. You are so right! We all have things to learn and different journeys to experience. That makes life fun and interesting! Good for you for being a doer. I am too but am definitely a work in progress. Just like you said, aren’t we all? 🙂
